  • Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease associated with systemic inflammation that can lead to comorbidities like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, anxiety, and depression.
  • Eczema, according to the National Eczema Association, “is the name for a group of conditions that cause the skin to become itchy, inflamed, or have a rash-like appearance. There are seven types of eczema: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and stasis dermatitis.

Coal tar

  • reduces scaling, itching and inflammation
  • can irritate the skin
  • messy, stain clothing and bedding, and can have a strong odor.

Steroids

Mild

  • Hydrocortisone 1%
  • Synalar 1 in 10 Dilution (fluocinolone acetonide 0.0025%)

With antibacterial

  • Fucidin H (hydrocortisone 1%, fusidic acid 2%)

With antifungal

  • Canestan HC (hydrocortisone 1%, clotrimazole 1%)
  • Daktacort (hydrocortisone 1%, miconazole nitrate 2%)
  • Nystaform HC (hydrocortisone 1%, nystatin 100,000units/g, chlorhexidine 1%)

Moderate

  • Betnovate RD (betamethasone valerate 0.25%)
  • Eumovate (clobetasone butyrate 0.05%)
  • Fludroxycortide Tape (4 micrograms/cm2)
  • Modrasone (Alclometasone dipropionate 0.05%)

With Urea

  • Alphaderm (hydrocortisone 1%, urea 10%)

With antifungal and antibacterial

  • Trimovate (clobetasone butyrate 0.05%, oxytetracycline 3%, nystatin 100,000units/g)

Potent

NICE: Do not use potent corticosteroids continuously at any site for longer than 8 weeks. Do not use very potent corticosteroids in children and young people.

  • Betnovate (betamethasone valerate 1%)
  • Locoid (hydrocortisone butyrate 1%) 
  • Synalar (fluocinolone acetonide 0.025%)
  • Elocon (mometasone furoate 0.1%)

With antibacterial

  • Fucibet (betamethasone valerate 0.1%, fusidic acid 2%)

  • Synalar N (fluocinolone acetonide 0.025%, neomycin sulfate 0.5%)

With salicylic acid

  • “lipid-soluble” ingredient, - effectively penetrate your pores - useful for oily and acne-prone skin (particularly for those with “open comedones,” also known as blackheads) because it helps unclog pores and keep them free of acne-causing debris 
  • reduces the scaling of scalp psoriasis
  • prepares the scalp to absorb the medication more easily
  • Diprosalic (betamethasone diproprionate 0.05%, salicylic acid 3%)

With vitamin D

for use in psoriasis only works as a mild-to-moderate anti-inflammatory

  • Dovobet (betamethasone diproprionate 0.05%, calcipotriol 50micrograms/g)
  • Enstilar (betamethasone diproprionate 0.05%, calcipotriol 50micrograms/g)

Very potent

  • Dermovate (clobetasol propriate 0.05%)
  • Dermovate scalp lotion (clobetasol propriate 0.05%)
  • Etrivex shampoo (clobetasol 500mcg/g)
  • Dovobet (betamethasone diproprionate 0.05%, calcipotriol 50micrograms/g) Enstilar (betamethasone diproprionate 0.05%, calcipotriol 50micrograms/g)

Scalp  applications

  • Betacap (betamethasone valerate 0.1% with cocnut oil)
  • Elocon (mometasone furoate 0.1%)
  • Diprosalic (betamethasone 0.05% salicylic acid 2%)
