Before prescribing levonorgestrel

  • Is Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg tablets for patient's own use? - you must have a consultation with the patient not a representative
  • Are you over 16 years of age? If under, think Gillick Copetence
  • When did the unpotected sexual intercourse (UPSI) take place - tablet must be taken within 72 hours of UPSI, UID can be inserted upto 5 days after UPSI
  • Rule out pregnancy
    • Has patient had any other episodes of UPSI in this cycle
    • Was patient's  last period late, lighter/shorter or unusual in any way?
    • Have they already used Levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablets since your last period? 
  • Check for any interacting medication - (e.g. St John’s Wort)?
  • Check for any bowel/digestive diseases (e. g. Crohn’s Disease) or liver problems
  • Check for allergies
  • Discuss LARC - long acting reversible contraception - this should be recorded in patient records
